Introduction
Road accidents in India are a major cause of concern. Every day, many valuable lives are lost due to road accidents. In India, every four minutes, one person dies in a road accident.
Reasons behind road accidents in India:
- The main causes of road accidents are overspeeding and reckless driving. Many people, while driving, don’t follow the proper speed limit, which becomes a reason for the deaths of other people on the roads.
- Drinking and driving are another reason for accidents in our country. Drivers consuming alcohol become a great risk for pedestrians and smaller vehicles.
- Overloaded vehicles are also a major cause of accidents in India. It becomes difficult for the driver to control an overloaded vehicle. The driver loses control at any tricky point and causes an accident.
- Another reason is the bad condition of the roads or potholes on the roads. In our country, the roads are constructed under a contract system. A contract is issued to a contractor. He tries to make as much profit as he can by using low-quality materials. Due to some corrupt officials of the PWD (Public Works Department), the quality check is passed, and ultimately, common men suffer. After some months after the inauguration, we can find potholes on the roads.
- Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of severe injury. But bikers don’t like to wear it while driving bikes. Even if they wear it, it’s just because of the fear of traffic police.
- Indian roads are not safe for pedestrians, cyclists, and two-wheelers. There should be different lanes for cyclists and pedestrians and separate lanes for two-wheelers. But India lacks these types of roads.
- India is the second-largest-populated country in the world after China. The income of our people is growing. So, they want to have their vehicles. This is continuously increasing the pressure on our roads.
- During the winter season, the roads are covered with fog, and visibility is very low. Still, drivers exceed the speed limit and cause fatal accidents.
- These days, everyone is in a hurry, which results in deadly accidents on the road.
- Most accidents are caused by an attempt to overtake. While overtaking, either one loses control or is hit by another vehicle.
- Other reasons are not using a seat belt, using cell phones while driving, or not following proper lanes.

How to stop road accidents in India:
- First of all, people driving vehicles should follow discipline. The speed limit, following the proper lane, and wearing a helmet are some of the steps we should follow when we come to the road with vehicles.
- The condition of public transport systems like buses, local trains, metros, etc. should be improved. So, a smaller number of people will use personal vehicles to go to school, college, or the office.
- Separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians should be created wherever new roads are constructed in our country.
- Awareness programmes related to safe driving should be conducted at different places to make people aware.
- Fines for the breaking of traffic laws have been increased, and they should be implemented across India. Presently, only a few state governments have implemented this in their states.
- Licence-issuing authorities should take a proper trial before issuing a licence.
- CCTV cameras should be installed in proper locations, and anyone caught in rash driving should be given the punishment of social service or something.
- Teenagers below the age of 18 are not allowed to drive bikes or cars. But they violate the rules and come out with vehicles on the road.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we can say that life is precious. We should be very careful while driving on the roads and should not engage in rash driving. This way, we would not only save our lives but also the valuable lives of people on the road.
The government should focus on the construction of better-designed roads and the enforcement of traffic rules and regulations to help bring down the percentage of road accidents in India.
